Dan Phelan has been named president of Picayune Newsmedia LLC and publisher of the Picayune Item and its affiliated print and digital brands.
The Item and its affiliate brands are news and marketing leaders in Pearl River County. “We are privileged to be an essential link in serving readers with quality journalism that is vital to development of this community along with offering print and digital marketing services that link businesses to customers” Phelan said.
Phelan’s business career began in Houston with Valassis where he spent 18 years as a Client Services Manager, Account Executive and Regional Sales Manager. Valassis is an advertising and marketing company.
His 16 years of newspaper experience began when he joined The Dallas Morning News in 2003 as the Director of Preprints and National Accounts. He assumed additional sales leadership and operations responsibilities over the next several years and in 2012 became the Chief Revenue Officer. He held that position until 2015.
During the following year and a half, he owned a business in Colorado that specialized in commercial plumbing and HVAC installations.
In 2017 he joined the Houston Chronicle as President and Chief Revenue Officer of the community newspaper group and the regional sales organization. In that position, he was responsible for leading a group of 21 newspapers to expand print and online readership.
“This is a great opportunity for me to use my prior experience to help the Picayune Item strengthen its position as the primary news and information source in Picayune,” Phelan said. “The newspaper has a great history of quality journalism and I fully expect that tradition to continue unabated. We remain committed to providing our readers with outstanding print and online news that is important to them.”
“My wife and I are excited to be joining the Picayune community. We were very attracted to the ongoing revitalization efforts taking place and are looking forward to contributing to its growth”.
