The
Newspaper
History
Founded in 1867; owned for many years by the Plym family of Niles; sold
in the 1970s to Knight-Ridder; was sold by Niles Ridder to Walls Newspapers
and later to Les Daughtry, an associate of Walls; was sold in 1988 to
Boone/Narragansett Publishing of Mich., L.P.; Boone Newspapers became
sole owners of all Leader Publications properties in 2000.
Goal

publish the best community newspaper this community will support

Approximately
3,500 daily, Monday through Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Awards
The Star has won a number of first-place awards including several for
feature writing in the Michigan Press Association contest; General Excellence
honorable mention winner in 2000.
Community
involvement
Our newspaper and its employees are active in a number of area organizations,
including United Way of Greater Niles, Niles Rotary Club, Salvation Army,
Fernwood Botanic Gardens and Nature Center, Four Flags Area Chamber of
Commerce and the Southwestern Michigan Economic Growth Alliance.
