History
James Heddon's family, who also made the first fishing lures, founded
the Dowagiac Daily News on Feb. 6, 1897. There is a Heddon museum owned
by Mayor Don Lyons, as well as a museum at SMC. A Web site, www.dowagiacnews.com,
was introduced Jan. 1, 2000. The Daily News (circulation 2,400) is the
only daily newspaper in rural Cass County, which leads Michigan in pork
production.

Our newspaper and its employees are active in a number of area organizations,
including the Dowagiac Area Chamber of Commerce, Dowagiac Rotary Club;
